That is the Compromise of 1877.
Informal agreement negotiated between president-elect Rutherford B. Hayes's lieutenants and moderate southern Democrats in which Democrats agreed to accede to Hayes's presidency in the disputed 1876 election in exchange for the withdrawal of federal troops from the South and the promise of federal subsidies for internal improvements. The agreement in effect marked the end of reconstruction.
