The Declaration of Independence was a document written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776. It was written to declare, hence the name, independence for the 13 colonies of Britain and its King, King George III.
Remember that the colonists, specifically the Patriots as opposed to the loyalists, did not support the tyrannical rule of King George. They longed for independence and decided enough was enough. The intended audience was the king.
