Read this excerpt from Anne Frank Remembered.

A few minutes later, the Dutchman who had first entered our office, the man with the gun, came back into my room. Ignoring me, he sat down at Elli's desk across from me and dialed the telephone. I heard him asking that a car be sent.

Why is this excerpt suspenseful?

It is suspenseful because you do not know what might happen next. What is the Dutchman planning on doing with the gun? Is he going to kill her? Why is he silent and ignoring her? All of these questions really amplify the suspense factor.

  • The excerpt is suspenseful because you don't know what the man wants to use the car sent for or what he wants to do with the gun

  • You don't Know the motive of the man who sat across Elli's desk. The man has ignored you without speaking a word and he is also holding a gun. You don't know exactly who the man has called with the telephone.

Therefore, the excerpt is full of suspense because there are so many questions you don't have answers to according to the excerpt.
