Edwin H. Sutherland popularized the term white-collar crime through the “American Sociological Review (White-Collar Criminality)” journal. It was written in February 1940. Sutherland explained that white-collar crime had similar meaning with various frauds devoted by government professionals and business. Â
These crimes are categorized by fraud, embezzlement of funds, or violation of public trust. This crime is not based on application or threats through physical or violence. The motivation behind the crime is financial - to get or avoid losing money, property, services or to get as much personal profit as you can or it can be called a business.
This crime is not a crime without victims. A single fraud can destroy a company, destroy families for example by eliminating their savings, or embezzle billions of dollars in costs to investors (or even all three at once).
