Lewis and Clark did not want to reach the Gulf of Mexico. Lewis's and Clark's goals mostly dealt with exploring the uncharted territory in the United States. There was really no need to reach the Gulf of Mexico. The only water they had in their goals was the Pacific Ocean so that the U.S. could reach port markets.
