David Smith was an American sculptor and painter, best known for his large steel abstract geometric sculptures. One of the most important American sculptors of the twentieth century, he was the first to construct welded metal sculptures in America. His experience working in a car body workshop gave him the skills to use metal as his medium. His first sources of inspiration were the welded-steel industrial sculptures of Pablo Picasso and Julio Gonzalez. These artists, along with the Russian constructivists, inspired him to create these abstract revolutionary art forms.

David Smith (1906–1965) was born Roland David Smith in Decatur, Indiana. His family moved to Paulding, Ohio, when he was 15 years old. In high school, he took a correspondence art class in cartoon drawing through the Cleveland Art School. After high school, Smith attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio for only one year, 1924–1925. He left school and took a job as a riveter, welder, and lathe-operator at the Studebaker automobile factory in South Bend, Indiana. There he developed metalworking skills.
