Weight gain is NOT one of the classic symptoms of diabetes
- Diabetes is a disease associated with excessively high glucose (sugar) levels in the blood.
- Glucose in the blood is the main source of energy and is obtained from the foods we eat.
- Insulin is a peptide hormone produced by β cells of the pancreatic islets, which is required to break down blood glucose. In diabetes, insulin concentration does not rise in response to the increase in blood glucose.
- Diabetes may be associated with:
- weight loss, despite increased appetite: when insulin levels are very low, the body burns fat and muscle to obtain energy.
- Excessive thirst and increased urination (also urinary tract infection) because kidneys are overstressed to filter and absorb excessive glucose.
In conclusion, weight gain is not considered one of the classic symptoms of diabetes.
