I would say that reduced trade barriers and the proliferation of free trade areas in the world has mainly resulted in the increased trade (world-wide) plus perhaps somewhat from reduced shipping costs. Also, countries like China have developed expertise in a wide range of goods which can compete with goods produced in the Western countries.
