During the 1950s, drugs were discovered that could reduce the symptoms of schizophrenia by lowering levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine.
These types of drugs are known as phenothiazines. There are two types of neuroleptic drugs that are used for
the treatment of schizophrenia
symptoms which acts by changing levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, that
are typical neuroleptics and atypical neuroleptics.
