La
Venta, located in the Mexican state of Tabasco, is an archaeological site full
of artifacts from the Olmec civilization, which preceded the Aztecs and among
the oldest Mesoamerican civilizations. La Venta was the Olmec’s civic and
ceremonial center, and the Great Pyramid excavated there probably contained a
cache of buried tomb offerings. Experts still don’t know the exact purpose of
the pyramid.
