Merrill could be experiencing what is known as a manic state. Manic state is often seen as a counterpart to depression but mania when irritable can also cause anxiety and even violence. Mania is characterized by abnormal arousal and elevated energy level and the decreased need for sleep among other things though some serious cases also exhibit hallucinations. There are different states of mania and some of them can be quite irritating and some even life threatening.
