When there is neither an egalitarian or patriarchal norm existing regarding marital powers, resource theory can explain how the balance takes place. Many times, this balance is based upon the resources that each partner can contribute to the relationship, instead of the simple act of being of a certain background conferring a status of power on one half of the couple.
