Let X = speed of car
thus X-8 = speed of bus

bus trip = 20(X-8)
car trip = 16X

mileage each way is equal so

20(X-8)=16X
20X-160=16X
20X=16X+120
20X-16X=16X+160-16X
4X=160
X = 160/4 = 40 miles one way
