Due to the spherical shape of the earth and its tilting angle as it revolves around the sun, different points of the earth, based on their position from the poles, receive varying annual energy levels from the sun. At the equator, the sun rays generally ‘hit’ the region in a ‘concentrated’ form and more or less are right angle hence more energy per unit area. The closer you get to the poles the less energy received because the same sun rays ‘hit’ at the earth on larger surface area and at oblique angle. Also due to the angle with which the sun ‘hits’ the different regions, it determines the length of atmosphere the rays have to travel through before they reach the earth's surface. The closer to the poles the longer the atmosphere the sun rays have to travel hence losing some the energy before ‘hitting’ the earth's surface. The closer you get to the poles from the equator, therefore, the cooler it becomes. This affects the climates of the region which subsequently affects the ecosystems in respective regions.
