The United Nations is a inter-governmental organization which was founded in 1945, in the aftermath of WWII, with the aim of preserving international security and peace. It was the sucessor of the former League of Nations that was created after WWI, and which did not serve the purpouse of keeping peace. The UN had 51 members at its foundation while nowadays it counts with 193 members.
