Another word that is associated with lipid is fat.
A substance that is insoluble in water and soluble in alcohol, chloroform and ether is known as lipid. It is also another word for fat.
Further Explanation
In living cells, lipid is major component. Apart from carbohydrates and proteins, lipid is also main component of plant and animal cells. We have different types of lipids and some of the examples of common lipids are butter, vegetable oil, cholesterol, waxes, fat soluble vitamins and phospholipids. All these compounds have common characteristics; they are insoluble in water though soluble in one or more organic solvent.
Although, Lipids containing an ester functional group could be hydrolyzed in water and lipids that doesn’t contain an ester functional group are considered to nonhydrolyzable. Hydrolysable lipids include waxes, glycolipids, phospholipids and neutral waxes while the nonhydrolyzable lipids include steroids and fat soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, B, D and K.
Functions of lipids.
Orgasms used lipids to store energy, which could be as intracellular messengers, as a signaling molecule and lastly as structural constituent of cell membrane. Nonhydrolyzable lipids such as fat-soluble vitamins (A, B, D and K) are stored in the fat and liver.
They are isoprene based lipids. Some lipids types are obtained from the diet and others are synthesized in the body. Animal and plants triglycerides, membrane phospholipids also known as cholesterol and steroids are the types of lipids that present in the food.
However, lipids that can also be obtain from carbohydrates from diet through a process known as lipogenesis.
