Nonfiction literature generally fits into one of four types determined by the writer's intent: narrative tells a story; expository provides information; descriptive produces evocative images in the reader's mind; and persuasive attempts to change the audience's mind.

A biography- a book about a person's life written by someone else.
autobiography- a book that someone writes about his or her life.
and a memoir- a book a person writes about a particular time in his or her life; it does not cover from the birth to death.
