Generally, chemists separate components of substances by taking advantage of the properties of the substances that are unique to each one.
For instance, to separate a mixture of salt and stones, a chemist will pour the mixture in water. He does this, because he is taking advantage of the fact that stones will not dissolve in water, only salt will.
