Cooley argued that people's sense of self is shaped through imagined others: first we envision how others see us and how they might judge their image of us, and then we adjust to that. So when we try on different outfits for a first date or a first day at school or on the job, with an eye toward how others will receive these differently dressed versions of ourselves, we are acting according to Cooley's theory.
