When
a conditioned stimulus (CS) is presented repeatedly without the unconditioned stimulus (US), the conditioned response
diminishes in a process called respondent extinction. As a behavioral process, when
an extinction procedure is in effect, extinction refers to a decline in the
strength of the conditioned response (CR).
