means: b=5s-2


"in total,the boys have been on the soccer team for 10 years."

means: b+s=10


so we have the equations:

i) b=5s-2

ii) b+s=10


substitute b in ii) with 5s-2, as they are equal, from i

(5s-2)+s=10

5s-2+s=10

6s=12

s=2, 


then , from b+s=10, b=8


Answer: Brad has been in the team for 8 years.
