The moon is much closer to the earth, therefore the earth has a greater gravitational pull on the moon than the sun does.
Even though the sun has a greater mass than earth the moon orbits earth because it is closer to earth than the sun.
Explanation;
Moon orbits around the Earth due to the gravitational force.
Gravitational force can be calculated by using following formula.
F = Gm₁m₂ / r²
Where, F is the gravitational force, G is the gravitational constant, m₁ and m₂ are the masses of objects and r is the distance between objects.
According to the formula, gravitational force depends on masses of objects and distance between objects.
But the distance between sun and moon is higher than the distance between moon and the Earth. When the distance increases, the gravitational force decreases. Hence, although the sun has a greater mass moon orbits Earth.
