A war that was fought mostly with words and policies is often referred to as a “Cold War.” The term specifically refers to the geopolitical tension and rivalry between the Soviet Union and its allies, and the United States and its allies, which lasted from the end of World War II in 1945 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. While there were proxy wars and some military skirmishes during this period, much of the conflict was characterized by ideological, economic, and political competition rather than direct military confrontation.
