A good way to analyze anything is using the acronym "HIPPO" the O is only needed for doing an essay.
H- Historical context, think about what else is going on in the time period of the document. We're people upset about something? Was there any conflicts happening at the time?
I- Intended audience, think about who the writer/artist is trying to talk to through there work. Are they encouraging a certain type of person? For example an artist could make art that encourages young men to join the army
P- Purpose, similar to the I but the question is Why are they making this document? What purpose does the document serve?
P- Point of view, this one is a bit difficult but can be figured out. Who is the author? Is he a soldier in the war or a man of congress?
O- (i forgot what it stands for) but you would use the O if you were to write an essay and it would go into your conclusion. The O is basically thinking about the HIPP and comparing it to another time, for example When the English first came to America and everything was new to explore, that is similar to when Americans first landed on the moon.
