If they are congruent (equal) then we can say...

x=y-1 and 3x-2=2y+1

If we substitute x=y-1 in the second equation we get:

3(y-1)-2=2y+1

3y-3-2=2y+1

3y-5=2y+1

y-5=1

y=6, and since x=y-1

x=5

So x=5 and y=6
