Feed them, Give them water, Walk them ( if they need to be walked), Clean up after them, Show them affection, DONT IGNORE THEM

I think that the key things would include:
-Responsibility
   -By walking the dog
   -Feeding the dog
   -Giving the dog attention
- It would also make them feel "more grown up" and proud of the accomplishments.
   -Pride
   -Confidence
