In 1977, Carter hosted Egyptian leader Anwar el-Sadat and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin for two weeks at Camp David.  A formal peace treaty emerged from these “Camp David Accords” calling for Israel’s historic withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula. In turn, Egypt acknowledged Israel as a nation.
