1) x + y = 250

2) 2y + 4x = 780

make x the subject in equation 1:

  • x + y = 250
  • x = 250 - y

insert this in equation 2:

  • 2y + 4(250 - y) = 780
  • 2y + 1000 - 4y = 780
  • 2y - 4y = 780 - 1000
  • -2y = -220
  • y = 110

So, there were total 110 students.

Find for x:
