appears that most of the deaths were caused by the tsunami following
the eruption and collapse of Krakatoa. I couldn't find the 1883
populations and distances of the towns and villages. I did find the
death tolls for several of those suffering the largest numbers of
deaths. The largest death toll was Tjirinjin (Tyrengin), Java with
12,022 deaths, 22 miles away.
