One way that really helps to think about is to say to yourself, "Rise Over Run" So, vertical shifts will be in your numerator and horizontal shifts will be in your denominator.
For example: If you have the slope [tex] \frac{1}{2} [/tex] for every 1 point you go up, you also got 2 to the right
The same goes for this one [tex] \frac{-4}{6} [/tex]. For every 4 points you go down, you go 6 to the right.
As we can see from the graph, for every 1 point shifted up, you are moving to the right 4, so your slope is [tex] \frac{1}{4} [/tex]
