By living near the ocean, the soil will be much more fertile which results in better crop growth. If the water is drinkable, you have a large amount of water to keep livestock and to keep yourself alive. Fishing would also be big. Plus, do not forget that you can use a river to transport yourself, and it helps keep you from being lost!
