Herculaneum like nearby Pompeii was buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79. The mud and lava that buried Herculaneum also preserved the bodies of the people for centuries. The mud and lava hardened luke concrete when it cooled. This preserved the bodies better than at Pompeii which was covered in hot ashes.
