During the 1960s, the New Left was a political movement that was part of the student movement. It wanted participatory democracy, or direct individual participation in the decisions that affected the student's lives. It was like a battle cry of the student movement. Tom Hayden was a key figure in this movement. College students involved in this movement fought for civil rights and university reforms as well as protested against the Vietnam War. SDS, or Students for a Democratic Society, was at the core of this movement.
