Global interactions and entanglements between the West and Asia are at present more and more at the forefront of scholarly attention and the Heidelberg Cluster of Excellence, aptly named `Asia and Europe in a Global Context', is an initiative to facilitate academic endeavors in this promising area of research. Under the auspices of this Cluster a conference was organized in which the participants looked at the phenomenon of the state, and related processes of state building, in early modern Asia and Europe.(
