Helen kept her eyes wide shut as she read the telegram informing her of her husband's tragic fate while climbing the rocky peak.

She was nervous as to what the message said. She didn't want to read it, but she couldn't stop herself.

It was something beyond her belief. So, while her eyes were open and she could see it perfectly clear, they might as well have been shut because she did not believe them anyway.
