After taking a short trip to England in 1833, Garrison founded the American Anti-Slavery Society, a national organization dedicated to achieving abolition.  Reverend Lovejoy wrote an American newspaper editor and martyred abolitionist. he died in defense of his right to print antislavery material in the period leading up to the American Civil War. Frederick Douglass was a compelling force in the anti-slavery movement. A man of moral authority, Douglass developed into a charismatic public speaker. Prominent abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison recognized his oratory skill and hired him as a speaker for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society.
