This system of employment was called the patronage system. A wealthy patron would spend on the composer for a piece of music and decide as well what to write (compose). The wealthy families from Europe became a patron of music, which allowing composers to focus on their work without being worried about money.
One of the disadvantages of this employment system was that music composers work as servants to wealthy patrons by writing and performing pieces.
Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, and George Frideric Handel were some of the famous baroque composers supported by patron, which helped them getting fame and gain audiences in public.
