The geographical features shape the culture, people, tools, religion. People adapt to their environments so the tools they make are specifically for the land. If they live in tall mountains they might start iron-smithing because of the abundance of coal. Most cities on lakes, are big on fishing.

In terms of Mesopotamia, the "fertile crescent" is widely dependent on the geographical features for the cities and towns. Lakes and water in the area were destined to be places for settlement because water is a staple.

Mesopotamia is a historical region of Western Asia, situated within the Tigris–Euphrates river system, in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent.

Fertile is good for farming, hence good for settlement of farmers and people wanting to develop & domesticate food.

Imagine if instead they hunted a chicken rather a Turkey, on tHanksgiving. Everything would be changed, if that makes sense. The relationship between the land and the people is the determined answer of everything the people do. If the land gives you lemons, the people will make lemonade.
