Respuesta :
Non-metals seek to gain electrons while metals seek to lose electrons when trying to attain octet states.
Octet structure
The octet structure of atoms refers to a state of filled outermost shells.
Ions of non-metals are usually negatively charged and therefore, require that they gain electrons in order to have a filled outermost shell.
Ions of metals, on the other hand, are usually positively charged. This means that they have free electrons in their outermost shells. Hence, they always look to lose these electrons in order to achieve an octet state.
