To "throw light on" something is to clarify or explain it. For example by answering your question I am shedding or throwing light onto your confusion. Confusion can be seen as darkness and the answer is the light.
Example: When you can’t comprehend something you’d ask them to throw light one their statement or question. (The person before me explained it better).
