Answer:

The main function of interest groups is to inform the public of the messages of politicians, and even the wrongdoings of rival officials. They are also used to collect data to better understand the opinion of the public towards certain officials, and places they may be lacking in support. They do this by conducting surveys, having large meetings, and conducting seminars. They also send out emails and letters to inform people about the messages of politicians. Now through the use of the internet, these interest groups can include far more people than ever before, and those who run them can reach a large and more diverse audience. Additionally with new computer programs and advancements in statistics results from interest groups are far more accurate and reliable.

There are many benefits of holding interest groups, the foremost being learning public opinion. Those who hold public interest groups can determine which direction a certain demographic might sway in an election, and maybe target that group more heavily with certain advertisements. While some may find targeted advertising annoying, it is highly effective to share a specific message to hopefully change the minds of indecisive voters. Interest groups are very important for elections, but they are not exactly perfect. Interest groups are limited to those who interact with them. In person interest groups are limited to very few individuals, and often these individuals might be very like minded.

I believe that the effectiveness of interest groups to sway public opinion is very high in certain areas and demographics. Many people may have their mind made up immediately when candidates are announced and so any amount of campaigning will not change these peoples opinions, but there are also just as many that are indecisive. And through the use of interest groups officials can determine who these people are, and what the most effective route of campaigning to them will be. In many elections the public opinion has been swayed against one candidate or another through the use of interest groups to identify what a person might dislike or like about an official, and build upon this opinion.
