Eannes Sails Past Cape Bojador

Gil Eannes was the servant of the Portuguese Prince Henry, known as Henry the Navigator because he funded several Portuguese expeditions to the west coast of Africa. In 1434, Eannes became the first explorer to successfully cross Cape Bojador on Africa’s west coast. Before Eannes, Prince Henry had paid for several explorers to achieve what Eannes did, but none of them had survived the journey.

Bartolomeu Dias Sails around the Cape of Good Hope

After 1434, the Portuguese continued to venture farther down the west coast of Africa. These expeditions brought back slaves, as well as stories about Africa’s thriving gold trade. In 1488, Bartolomeu Dias was able to sail around the southernmost tip of Africa, known as the Cape of Good Hope. This achievement opened the way to the first European sea trade route to Asia.

Columbus Reaches Hispaniola

Christopher Columbus was not the first person to reach the Americas, but he helped start the age of exploration and colonization of the Americas.
