When writing anything important you should make sure that you are understandable, in this case, when you are writing a speech that it strictly formal and a good tone for 'grad students' you need to make sure you have a good topic. Anybody who is listening to a speech wants it to be intresting and meaningful. Lastly, don't make an important topic funny unless its something that you know as a fact isn't going to hurt anyones feeling or make someone less confident.
