Here's a little to help you understand:

Despite all the hardships, the countless battles lost, the many men that suffered, America chose to fight for freedom, and, ginormous story short, this is something huge. Britain was the world superpower back then, and America was just a scrap of land with people scattered around, the only useful government being the King's rule. But they managed to create a Continental Congress, have all these leaders, and despite all these horrid, inhuman acts the British committed trying to tame them, the Americans pushed through, which is something every person values. The characteristics of most Patriots back then are the characteristics you see in the protagonists of modern books. So yeah, we're pretty awesome.
