It heats up the lower mantle more than it does the upper mantle just like water in a vessel being heated from below. The hotter lower mantle, therefore, gets less dense and tends to rise as the denser and cooler upper mantle tends to sink. The result is convection currents in the mantle that drive the tectonic plates of the crust above.
