What is context of the excerpt?

Extremely vital to this sonnet is a sugary plant called the Lotus which when eaten, set off neglect in the people who ate it, to such an extent that they overlooked getting back to where they came from.

The entry discusses a plant that was sweet to eat for it was sugary. Notwithstanding, the people who ate of it were perplexed with carelessness to such an extent that they didn't consider speaking with nor returning to their homes significant any longer. They liked to remain on to eat a greater amount of it and watch it blossom.
