You must remember that a polynomial is written like so...

ax^2 + bx + c

In this case...

a = 1

b = 9

c = 20

To factor you must find two numbers who both add up to b (9) AND multiply to c (20)

5 + 4 = 9

5 * 4 = 20

so...

(x + 5)(x + 4)

Hope this helped!

For this case we must factor the following expression:

[tex]x ^ 2 + 9x + 20[/tex]

To do this, we must find two numbers that, when multiplied, result in 20 and when added together, result is obtained 9. These numbers are 5 and 4.

[tex]5 * 4 = 20\\5 + 4 = 9[/tex]

So we have to express the expression as:

[tex](x + 5) (x + 4)[/tex]

Answer:

[tex](x + 5) (x + 4)[/tex]
