The Germans had planned to invade Britain but for the Germans to ensure a successful attack, they needed to have air superiority or control of the skies. In order to do this, they needed first to destroy the Royal Air Force. Thus the Battle of Britain happened-- to gain control of the skies over Britain and the Channel.
