THE SUFFERING OF RACISM.
Literary essay
Racism has caused suffering in millions of people throughout history.
Not in vain, Alan Paton, author of Cry for the Beloved Land, reflected the cruel and ruthless situation to which black people were exposed before and during Apartheid.
And it is through this work that many people around the world could contract that life for black people has not been easy, starting with the negative impact that this practice generated on the people who suffered from it.
It seems incredible but the story puts two different races to the encounter and makes them analyze their conditions of being human as it is the case of Steven Kumalo and the father of the individual killed by Absalom, his son.
As you can see, Steven was black, and when he met that white man, wounded by the murder of his son and supporter of Apartheid, you can feel the suffering that both father and son had to go through.
It is important to note that the crying that is expressed in the work, is not only for the beloved Land, but for other circumstances that would cause such violence, ignorance, poverty and especially racism.
Therefore, the incessant search of a black father Steven Kumalo to his son, was not the only thing that this man had to live, as he also experienced segregation, the fact of living apart from others and not living like normal people .
So also suffered his son Absalom, who is imprisoned for the death of a man a white man, whose father is precisely a supporter of the practice of Apartheid.
It is then when we must remember that this system consisted in the separation of the races and that was considered a law in South Africa, country where the work is mostly recreated.
Despite the great difficulties experienced by both, crying for the beloved land allows the reader to become aware of the harsh reality of the practice of racism and at the same time expresses how great a father's love for his son can be.
