August 1914. It was directly triggered by the assassination of the Austrian archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, on 28th June 1914. this lead to other allied countries to get involved. After the assassination, Austria-Hungary declared war on serbia with germany backing them up. germany then declared war on russia. british forces declared war on germany and eventually everyone joined in lol.
